This piece was an assignment for the Typography II course at Sam Fox School for Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. The prompt was to take a modern article and create a layout that resembled a historical piece of design. I decided I wanted to mimic the design from the Soviet Constructivist movement, as its bold shapes and texts have always inspired my work. From there, I found a particularly modern article, which was a Marxist analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the Constructivist style is most often paired with propaganda, I decided to lean into the design of a Soviet Newspaper.
This assignment was meant to highlight the design of Constructivism through a modern lens, and that is why I chose to mimic Soviet propaganda.
This piece is not meant to serve as an endorsement or dismissal of any ideology or historical era.
